What is the Pet Animal Serum Treasury? The Pet Animal Serum Treasury (PAST) is a not-for-profit organization supported by the Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF) and the Orentreich Foundation for the Advancement of Science, Inc., (OFAS) of New York, NY. PAST is dedicated to improving veterinary care by collecting and archiving blood (serum) specimens from diseased and healthy cats and dogs. This repository will serve as a unique resource for research into the causes of or potential risk factors for cancer and other diseases in pets. It is the only resource of its kind for animals in the world.

“The Animal Cancer Foundation will never induce illness or cause animals to suffer unnecessarily. In addition to this being a more humane approach to performing trials, researchers have found that pets with naturally occurring cancer are better models of how cancer behaves in people than are mice or rats with laboratory-induced cancer. This is a win-win situation-for the pets and the human cancer patients who ultimately will benefit from the knowledge gleaned from these trials.”

How You Can Help You and your pet have the opportunity to benefit veterinary medicine in a very important and unique way. By contributing serum samples to the Pet Animal Serum Treasury research into the causes of diseases in cats and dogs will be greatly enhanced. The donated serum will be stored in a large freezer facility in Cold Spring-on-Hudson, NY, and the basic information that you provide about your pet will be kept in a computer record.

Studies examining risk factors such as infectious agents or toxins and lifestyle choices can then be initiated using the stored sera and databank.

The creation, maintenance, and use of the Pet Animal Serum Treasury is an entirely non-profit endeavor. Neither the Orentreich Foundation for the Advancement of Science, Inc., nor the Animal Cancer Foundation will sell or profit from the use of this invaluable research resource. Your veterinarian donates time and effort in the collection, storage, and shipping of these samples, for which this dedicated health professional should be commended.

Serum donations from healthy as well as sick animals are appreciated. Donations from multiple pets in the same household as well as several donations from the same pets over time are extremely important to the success of the Pet Animal Serum Treasury. There is absolutely no cost to you.

Your participation is greatly appreciated!
